Puning Yingge dance shines in Bangkok on May Day

Amidst the resounding beats of drums and clashing of cymbals, a group of dancers performed the traditional Chinese Puning Yingge folk dance on the evening of May 1st at Asiatique The Riverfront in Bangkok, Thailand. Collaborating with the Wenyi Yingge Team from Phanat Nikhom, Chonburi Province, Thailand, performers of Puning Yingge brought the essence of "Chinese Warrior Dance" beyond borders.

The spectacle drew a crowd of Thai locals and tourists from around the world, who were captivated by the dynamic and graceful movements of the performers and experienced firsthand the unique charm of Guangdong's rich traditional culture. Spectators expressed awe at the powerful fusion of strength and beauty embodied in the Yingge dance, igniting a sense of passion and excitement.

"Ansai Waist Drum in the North, Puning Yingge in the South"—with a history spanning over 300 years, Puning Yingge dance has remained an enduring cultural treasure, passed down through generations in Puning, Guangdong. Originating from a segment of the classic Chinese novel "Water Margin," the roles and stories depicted in the Yingge dance symbolize the virtues of heroism, justice, righteousness, and peace, making it a cherished cultural emblem. The main form of performance involves large-scale collective dances, with performers wielding short wooden sticks, striking in rhythm with intensity.

The Sino-Thai Yingge Exchange and Performance, which commenced on April 30th, will continue until May 4th. Over the course of five days, the Puning Yingge Cultural Exchange Group will engage in cultural exchanges across three locations in Thailand, including its capital, Bangkok, as well as in Ratchaburi Province and Chonburi Province.

On April 30th, the Fumei Youth Yingge Team from Puning, in an unprecedented collaboration, danced alongside the Ratchaburi Yingge Team on the streets of Ratchaburi, Thailand. This marked the first-ever joint performance of Chinese and Thai Yingge dances, delivering a whirlwind of cultural exchange to Thai locals and international tourists alike, while fostering deeper ties between Chinese and Thai cultures.

On May 2nd, the Puning Yingge Cultural Exchange Group will join the annual Harvest Festival Folk Culture Parade in Phanat Nikhom, Chunburi Province. Following this, on May 3rd, a grand Sino-Thai Yingge Gala will grace the occasion. Enthralling performances will be presented by four esteemed teams: the Fumei Youth Yingge Team from Puning, the Mingdeshantan Yingge Team from Phanat Nikhom, the Wenyi School Yingge Team from Phanat Nikhom, and the Ratchaburi Yingge Team from Ratchaburi Province, each representing the rich tapestry of Yingge styles from both nations.
